Ring is a trusted name in the world of smart doorbells, and the Ring Video Doorbell 4 is the most advanced model in their basic lineup. While the $20 color pre-roll feature may not be necessary for everyone, it could be useful for those who prioritize security and want a complete view of events.
The design of the doorbell remains consistent with previous generations, and you can choose between white, black, or bronze color options. The installation kit includes everything you need for a hassle-free setup, including a mounting bracket, charging cable, wiring, and screws. The app also works seamlessly, and you can take advantage of quick responses with two-audio communication.

Google's Nest Doorbell Battery is a top-tier video doorbell that works seamlessly with other smart home devices, such as security cameras and the best smart speakers. The Nest Battery's modern design sets it apart from your standard doorbell, and we tested it in our primarily Google-powered smart home to take full advantage of its compatibility.
Also included are quick response messages, package detection, and an automotive battery-saving feature to extend its lifespan. The 3:4 aspect ratio gives a longer view but less width, and if you're concerned about privacy, you can turn off the smart features via the app.

The Toucan Video Doorbell is an excellent device that offers a built-in siren and emergency calling features. It works seamlessly with Alexa and Google Assistant and delivers all of the necessary features also provided by Google, Ring, and other brands. With its simplistic black-and-white design, the Toucan may appear basic, but it offers a 180-degree field of view and a square 4:4 image.
The doorbell comes with a compact wireless chime, which alerts you (with a choice of six sounds) even without your phone. With two-way audio and remote access to the live feed through the app, you can monitor your home remotely from anywhere. You can also bookmark recordings and add up to ten people to your account with the Pro Plan.

5. Ring Video Doorbell (2nd Gen)
Our expert review:

The standard 2020 model of the Ring Video Doorbell is a reliable and affordable option for anyone looking for a smart doorbell with all of the basic features. It offers 1080p video quality and other expected features, but unlike newer Ring models, it doesn't have a convenient battery release function. You can wire it to the remains, but the battery itself can't be replaced - meaning you have to remove the entire device when it's time to recharge.
However, it remains a great option for those on more of a budget and is reliable, with two-way communication and real-time alerts working seamlessly. The setup process is also straightforward, with an easy-to-use app and everything you need right out of the box.

The Arlo Essential Video Doorbell Wire-Free provides crystal-clear video and excellent two-way talkback but loses some points by requiring a monthly subscription fee. That said, the features that come with this add-on cost are well worth it, with a handy built-in siren, customizable motion detection, and 1080p HD video, all making this a great, affordable, and easy-to-use option.
During our testing, we found that daytime video footage was much clearer compared to night, and the talkback feature was more refined than we've seen on other doorbells. The modern and simple design makes it an ideal fit for any home.

The best wireless doorbells are chosen based on various criteria, including their affordability, video quality, ease of setup and use, app performance, compatibility with wider smart home systems, and more.
How to choose the best wireless doorbell for your home
Will my wireless doorbell work with Alexa/Google Home?
Compatibility with your smart home hub will depend on the wireless doorbell you buy, but, generally speaking, Ring doorbells will always work with Amazon Alexa smart speakers and displays. The same goes for Ring Alarms and other security products, as they all come under the same banner.
Similarly, Nest products come from Google and so will work well with a Google-branded doorbell. Anything else will vary, so it's important to check before buying.
Once set up, we absolutely love how some of the best wireless doorbells work with smart displays such as the Echo Show or Nest Hub, allowing you to see what's going on outside from the comfort of your kitchen or bedroom.
Are video doorbells safe?
Many are concerned - and for a good reason - about the security implications of essentially strapping a surveillance device to the front of your home, but there are many protections in place preventing things from getting dystopian.
We would recommend going for a well-known brand so as not to fall foul of a device that's more vulnerable to hackers, set a strong password when signing up, always download software updates when they are released, and make sure all settings are correct for your needs.
All this said smart doorbells could actually form an essential part of a home security system, adding an affordable camera that can detect motion and send alerts directly to your device when something untoward is going on.
Are wireless doorbells worth it?
Whether you opt for a chime-only doorbell or a smart video doorbell that doubles as a security device, you may be wondering whether investing in a wireless doorbell is actually worth it? After all, a traditional ringer has served you well up to this point.
Wireless doorbells offer convenience, first and foremost, allowing you to place your device pretty much anywhere (as long as it's within the vicinity of your Wi-Fi signal or indoor chime). This, combined with the smarts of modern releases from the likes of Google and Ring, makes the best wireless doorbells an affordable way to incorporate your front door into a wider smart home system.
